The main focus of this outreach program is to decrease the fear associated with honeybees.
We start with a basic understanding of honeybee behavior and learn to respect their space and allow the bees to be bees. We discuss the life cycle of honeybees, how honeybees make food for themselves (and us), how they live inside a hive and the different roles honeybees play within a colony. Our goal is to develop a more harmonious relationship with honeybees that is based on knowledge instead of fear.
One of the educational tools we have is an observation hive. The children are able to see real honeybees working on frames within an actual hive. It is especially useful when discussing the life cycle of honeybees and the various roles they play within the colony. They may even spot the queen bee!
We also utilize numerous children’s books, hands on models and dance to keep the children engaged as they learn. It is a fun and exciting way to cultivate an interest in honeybees and our environment!
